The Curriculum Innovations Torch symbolizes the CI Philosophy of Education. In our analogy, the whole torch is a student’s education while the flame is that person’s life. Each part of the torch represents a vital aspect of schooling.

  • The red core (wick) is the student’s basic skills and knowledge. Just as the wick must be adequate to properly serve the fuel, the basics are the vital foundation of an education.
  • The yellow fuel is the interesting lessons and extra-curricular activities that the student especially enjoys. The student is internally motivated to attack these learning opportunities.
  • The blue container represents the student with a full education, especially the social aspects. Much is molded before the wick and fuel of schooling is added. How successfully the student learns to interact with peers and authority and the degree to which native abilities are discovered and polished determine the capacity and luster of the vessel.
  • The flame is the person’s life. Just as the size and brightness of the flame result from the size and quality of the torch, the life we live is greatly affected by the quality of our education.

At Curriculum Innovations, our focus is the red core, the wick. This is the part of schooling that students must learn; the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. We believe that mastery of the basics is the key to successful schooling and the foundation of a successful education which is a great asset in the quest for a rich, satisfying life.

It should be noted that in Washington State, science has been added, and arithmetic has been expanded to the understanding and application of the core concepts mathematics. We enthusiastically support these expansions.
