Help your students… Build “The Molecule”.

Actually, you would teach molecular biology using one of our Curriculum Innovations MacroMolecule Model ( CIMMM) kits. If your students are old enough to use a low-temp hot-glue gun and if you will remain in the same classroom for a number of years, you and your students can make it all happen. It will take time, patience, and cooperation to complete the project but the interest and learning in the classroom start immediately.

The whole project takes years and when you’re done your class will learn under a safe, lightweight model of a working gene. In my classes, while it was a work in progress from the mid 80’s to the year 2001, it stirred up as much interest and inspired as many questions as the best of our projects.

Each year we spent a week working on the model, which I tried to call the “Macromolecule Model Project”. Eventually, as the kids took ownership, it became simply “The Molecule”. Before school students would bring in their friends to show the previous day’s progress. After school, more than once, I would look up from my desk to see a student’s animated arm motions in the doorway across the room. After much pointing at the “The Molecule”, Mom was led in to get the details for the next day’s after-school extra-credit work session.As the molecule grew, some of the students started calling me Mr. Molecule, a great improvement over my previous nickname, Mr. Mollusk.
